What to Expect at Your Consultation

Here is what to expect at your initial TMJ evaluation appointment

YOUR FIRST CONSULTATION

At your first visit, we will do everything we can to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. During your examination, we encourage you to tell us all about your symptoms and anything that concerns or bothers you. You might be surprised to learn that a seemingly unrelated symptom is an effect of TMD. We also encourage you to bring any nightguards or TMJ appliances you are already using to the appointment.

To get detailed information about your jaw joints, we will take X-rays and do a joint vibration analysis (JVA) to determine if either of your jaw joints makes noise when you open and close your mouth. The X-rays and the JVA help us more fully understand your particular condition.

After a preliminary examination, we will explain what we have found and talk about potential treatment options. We will also let you know what we likely can and cannot do for you based on our initial findings. If there is a good chance that treatment will help you, we will ask that you make another appointment for a complete set of records and a more precise diagnosis.

YOUR SECOND CONSULTATION

During your next visit, we will explain your diagnosis and your personalized treatment plan. We will also give you an estimate for your entire treatment. Once you have started treatment, we will send an extensive report to any healthcare providers with whom you wish to share the information.
