A Comprehensive List Of TMD Symptoms
TMJ disorders manifest differently in people based on their unique physiology and degree of jaw joint dysfunction. Some of the symptoms are not obviously linked to the jaw. To add to the confusion, untrained doctors will often attribute common TMJ disorder symptoms to other problems, like allergies, bad posture, stress, and sleep disorders. This is why medical doctors have a difficult time diagnosing TMD right away. If you suspect you have TMD, pay attention to your body and become aware of all the possible symptoms.
Symptoms of TMD
- Headaches – TMD-related headaches may be difficult to pinpoint because they mimic tension headaches, but headache is one of the most common symptoms associated with TMD.
- Neck, shoulder, and back pain – the neck and jaw are connected, so it is no surprise that TMJ disorders cause pain in the neck and the structures connected to it.
- Ear problems – the ear is directly above the jaw joint. TMJ can cause ringing, stuffiness, and pain in the ears. Related symptoms include dizziness, vertigo, and fainting.
- Bruxism – the condition in which you grind and clench your teeth unconsciously, especially at night, is called bruxism. Tense jaw muscles from TMJ disorder contribute to bruxism.
- Limited range of motion – patients with TMJ have difficulty opening their mouths wide, opening straight up and down, and moving their jaw from side to side.
- Popping and clicking – many patients hear and feel their jaw joint popping and clicking when they open wide or chew because their jaw joint is misaligned and their jaw muscles are tense.
- Fatigue when chewing – a healthy jaw joint should be able to handle the activity of chewing for a prolonged period. If the jaw becomes sore or tired while chewing, it’s likely a symptom of TMD.
