How To Travel Stress-Free When Suffering From TMJ
Do you have any upcoming travel plans? Perhaps you are in the midst of planning a vacation for the spring or summer. It is always a smart idea to make a plan for yourself when traveling. The added stress during travel can be difficult for many people. It can be extremely challenging for those suffering from TMJ. The extra stress can be triggering and lead to an increase or relapse of symptoms. We recommend taking a few precautions to ensure that you enjoy your travels free of discomfort.
Plan Ahead
As mentioned above, stress is an immediate trigger for many TMJ patients. It is beneficial to plan your trip ahead of time to be sure of your itinerary and avoid any last-minute decisions or changes. It is also wise to be sure that your trip will be at a leisurely pace. You don’t want to try to accomplish too much and become overwhelmed and stressed. Be sure to add in plenty of breaks and even a full day of rest if you are able. Depending on your travel destination, a trip to the spa or lounging by the pool can be perfect.
Take Breaks or Walks
Sitting for long periods of time can lead to added stress on your body. If taking a long car ride, be sure to break frequently and take a brief walk to stretch your legs and your body. Traveling by plane or train can be a little more difficult, but we recommend walking in the aisle regularly to move and stretch.
Know Your Limits
When you have TMJ, it is important to know your limits and not push them. This is extremely important if you are traveling. We would hate for you to feel some discomfort, try to push through, and then be miserable for the rest of your trip. It is better to take breaks when needed and move plans to later in the day or the next day if you aren’t feeling your best.
Bring a Pillow
If you will be traveling for some time, we recommend bringing a small pillow. It can be helpful for many methods of travel by providing support to your neck, head, and even your lower back. If you become uncomfortable, move the pillow as needed.
